Job title – Senior Legal Counsel (Lawyer)

Location – London (Hybrid)

Start date – ASAP

Contract – Initial 6 months+ rolling contract

Rate: Around £500 p/d PAYE OR up to £641.60 p/d via Umbrella


HSBC is currently seeking a Senior Legal Counsel (Law) to join their team in the London office/remote working, this contract will initially be for 6 months with continuous extension.

 

GLS’s primary function is to negotiate and execute legal agreements, whilst managing the legal risk in accordance with Group and local policies. 

 

SSF GLS’s primary function in Europe is to support and facilitate the Platform Origination, Repo and Stock Lending Business, and Securities Services Business lines. The Platform Origination Business includes Equity Prime, FX Prime Brokerage, FX Overlay, OTC Client Clearing, and Exchange Traded Derivatives.

 

The Securities Services Business includes Custody, Depositary, Fund Admin, Outsourcing, Securities Lending and Sub-Custody. Documentation which is negotiated within the team includes, but is not limited to, ISDAs and related credit support documentation, customer agreements, custody agreements, GMSLAs and GMRAs.

 

In this role, you'll be responsible for:

 

·      Primary responsibility is the management of timely, consistent and effective negotiation of product documentation upon request from the business areas supported by SSF offering a client friendly service to both internal and external clients. This also includes facilitating collaborative solutions with internal stakeholders in the pursuit of such business and to provide policy guidance where a requirement arises.

·      Work closely with onboarding functions where required or necessary, to ensure that the client service offering across GBM onboarding is unified and seamless.

·      Liaise with the Business, RMs, Credit, Operations, Tax and other internal clients as necessary to ensure that the appropriate terms are included in all agreements to ensure the effective protection of the Bank in line with Group policies and procedures and/or ensure that any necessary dispensations are being obtained.

·      Provide legal and/or documentation advice (as appropriate and within set parameters) that is succinct, easy to understand, and adds value by identifying the root cause of the problem and seeing the ‘bigger picture’.

·      Take the initiative, anticipate events, look for added involvement and responsibility in cases and provide solutions.

·      Contribute to the rollout of new agreement templates, policies and procedures.

·      Contribute to the improvement of processes within GLS, where opportunities arise.

·      Establish and maintain relationships with various stakeholders, across multiple geographies and cultural diversities

·      Maintain a detailed knowledge of HSBC Group operations and policies

·      Ensure that the business areas act in compliance with bank and departmental policies and procedures

·      Think independently and act on one’s own counsel, being mindful of always providing pragmatic and commercial advice

·      Be alert to external legal, political and regulatory considerations and implications

 

To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:  

  • Legal background (qualified lawyer or law degree) OR experienced negotiation background in one or more of the following fields:
  • Custody; Depositary; Equity Prime; Exchange Traded Derivatives; Fund Admin; FX Prime Brokerage; FX Overlay; OTC Client Clearing; Securities Lending; and Sub Custody. 
  • Prior experience in a similar role.
  • be proactive and dynamic
  • have the ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision
  • have an excellent knowledge of a variety of derivatives documentation, and be aware of the credit, legal, regulatory and operational issues/risks relating thereto.
  • have a big picture understanding of the financial markets and understands business and regulatory implications of documentation aspects
  • be responsive and focused on client service
