Public Sector Resourcing is currently seeking an SQL Database Technician for an initial 4 month contract on behalf of our client in the Public Sector

Location: Cardiff

Purpose of the Role: The objective is to recruit an experienced SQL Server engineer to plan and progress the upgrading of approximately 50 Microsoft SQL Server 2008R2 (and earlier) database instances to Microsoft SQL Server 2016 SP2 whilst ensuring continuity of live services.


Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

• Work with local resource to determine the number of SQL Server 2008 R2 and earlier databases and instances needing to be upgraded to SQL Server 2016.

• Work with local project management resources to devise and communicate a plan for the updates, including the optimum order to achieve a successful outcome.

• Document the technical steps in a plan required for the upgrades, which is to be agreed prior to execution.

• Develop and maintain a SQL environment to allow application teams to test their systems prior to upgrade or migration of databases and associated components.

• Work with local resource and application team leads to progress the agreed upgrade plan.

• Provide options to mitigate any risk or issue, which arise through the upgrade work, clearly explaining the preferred option and stating the pros and cons of all options.

• Provide documentation to support the new SQL Server 2016 database instances (design, as built, best practice guidelines, daily checks/tasks, a data backup schedule, risk and issues logs).

• Ensure all tasks are complete by end of June 2019.

• Assist in the day to day tasks required to ensure continuity of service for critical and administrative NHS Wales systems.

Skills and Experience

Experienced in the following versions of Microsoft SQL Server:

• 2008R2 SP3 (Essential)

• 2012 SP4

• 2014 SP2

• 2016 SP2 (Essential)

Skilled and has extensive experience in upgrading Microsoft SQL databases from legacy versions to SQL 2016 SP2.

Skilled in communicating with staff at all levels within a public sector organisation.

Flexible approach to work.

Able to work to strict deadlines.

Strong documentation and presentation skills.
