Summary

Radiological Protection Advisor required to provide radiological protection advice to assigned projects to ensure compliance with the Ionising Radiation Regulations, Radiological Safety Rules, Company standards, other statutory requirements and the relevant parts of the Environmental Permitting Regulations.

Reporting to the Head of Radiological Protection your will have responsibility for Management Systems and ensuring ongoing Audit compliance.

The role give scope for mentoring and developing a programme for trainee RPA’s.

Essential Skills, Qualifications andxperience

• RPA2000 accredited

• Relevant Nuclear sector experience.

• Degree qualified in a Science related discipline

• Experience of operational radiological protection

Key Duties/Responsibilities/Accountabilities

Safety, Environment & Security

• Set out controls to ensure the safe delivery of tasks and ensure compliance with the local and Magnox Management System

• Maintain knowledge of the relevant local and Magnox management systems

• Actively monitor and reinforce safety behaviours.

• Establish a safe operational culture and provide safety, security & environmental leadership

Leadership

• Effectively lead, oversee and direct a functional/support team monitoring performance and maintaining delivery to plan.

• Set and communicate work standards both within the team and to contractors (if applicable) and stakeholders.

• Establish the correct work ethic and culture within the team.

• Develop the skills, capabilities, and behaviours of your team. Use mentoring and coaching to ensure experience and knowledge is shared. Flagging risks and opportunities.

• Monitor and manage the performance of direct reports; actively supporting those at risk of underperforming, or with unacceptable levels of absence.

• Establish and maintain an appropriate and effective level of stakeholder engagement.

• Challenge the status quo and identify future opportunities through innovation within area of professionalism/ function/ business and process.

Delivery

• Provide detailed technical radiological advice to support site, projects and programmes. The advice to include the production of written documentation including departmental documents, technical reports, radiological risk assessments, designated work documentation, dose estimates and ALARP reports.

• Review and approve written work instructions for all work carried out within the controlled area boundary and other areas of the site if appropriate

• Develop and implement new radiological protection practices and procedures and the commissioning and introduction of new equipment and instruments.

• Co-ordinate radiological inspections and audits programmes to ensure the effective implementation of the site radiological protection programme.

• Review the results of routine and non-routine radiological surveys and other radiological protection programme assessments, ensuring that any anomalies or non-conformities identified are addressed in a timely manner.

• Advise on the requirements for compliance monitoring to meet legal or company requirements as appropriate.

• Provide technical support to personnel undertaking routine, non-routine or detailed technical radiological surveys liaising with the radiological protection supervisor as required.

• Ensure that their knowledge of site radiological conditions and current radiological issues is maintained.

• Liaise with company inspectors and external regulators during routine surveillance inspections, audits and investigations.

• Participate in the site emergency response team and in the development of robust radiation safety practices

• Support the effective deployment of company-wide policies, processes, systems and procedures ensuring that at all time the business remains compliant. This includes, but is not limited to, the need to comply with the company’s Equality and Diversity Policy and undertake identified associated learning and development activities.
