The IPO is currently undergoing an exciting period of transformation designing and delivering new services for its customers across Intellectual Property rights using a variety of channels including Digital.

Our UX Designers establish the best way to let users interact with services, in terms of both overall flow and individual design elements. This may involve the creation of, or change to processes, services and content across both digital and paper channels provided by the IPO.

Working across projects or work streams, you will be responsible for designing the end-to-end journey of services that both help a user complete their goal and meets the needs of the business.

You will be a confident and experienced designer familiar with the GDS service standards, who is able to develop concepts into designs based on evidence of user needs and organisational outcomes. You will be an expert in creating prototypes, mock ups and first iterations of digital services ready for user testing, which you may help facilitate.

You will make good decisions around approach, design and workload, and will offer guidance and support to junior team members.

You will use a range of information and evidence sources to understand user needs, and the opportunities and challenges of digital change for the IPO. You will understand how users interact with the office and how digital technologies are changing user behaviour.

You will be part of the IPO designer community to ensure alignment, best practice and help raise the maturity of the professions here at the IPO.

The main responsibilities:

• work across multi-disciplinary teams to deliver highly user focused and consistent experience across all IPO channels which met GDS standards

• work collaboratively with members of wider architecture and analysis team to provide consultancy services, challenging constraints and assumptions around service requirements or delivery

• take responsibility for translating and driving through user centred design concepts, from creating and iterating prototypes, to live digital services, whilst ensuring UX best practice across the IPO

• promote the value of a consistent user experience, through design and use of reusable elements by proactively engaging with colleagues across the organisation

• work autonomously as required taking responsibility for the identification and resolution of problems, exploring different approaches and challenging viewpoints

• work to agreed quality of standards, procedures and processes in accordance with IPO and GDS requirements

• support service managers to ensure their services meet the performance requirements set out in the Digital by Default Service Standard

• facilitate and promote the development and continual improvement of digital services using analytical evidence, usability testing and internal/external research

• participate in the IPO Designer Community sessions to ensure alignment and increase profession maturity

Person Specification/skills/experience

• Design – Expert in designing interactions professionally across a range of channels

• User centred design - Expert in working in a user centred design environment, conducting usability studies either directly or alongside user researchers

• Design Patterns and applications - Expert in identifying and recommending appropriate design patterns based on existing models

• Prototyping - Expert in sketching/concepting, design production, hand-coded HTML & CSS, rapid prototyping

• Team working - Expert in collaborative working within an agile, multi-disciplinary team environment; is able to deliver iterative design components (including user journeys) as part of a project team

• Software products - Expert in understanding the emerging UX landscape and of understanding implications for own design work

• Data informed design - Expert in using data to inform design decisions various mechanism including A/B or multivariate testing

• Writing for the web - Practitioner in writing plain English content that is accessible, usable and complies with business needs and GDS styles
